With about two weeks left to go until the announcement of this year’s Emmy Award nominations, it’s time to look at another category. Next up — Best Reality Competition Show.
This is probably the snooziest category in the Emmys. I mean, does it even matter which shows get nominated in the Best Reality Competition Show category when The Amazing Race has taken home the prize ten of the eleven years the award has been around? The Phil Keoghan-hosted competition is sure to get another nod, and probably another win. Yawn!!
Top Chef, the only show in history aside from The Amazing Race to win the award, is also likely to get a nomination, as it has for the past six years; so is The Voice, which broke through last year, and will definitely be back in the running again this year. But what about seven-time nominee Dancing with the Stars, which is coming off of its lowest-rated season yet? Project Runway has grabbed eight straight nominations, but it has lost a lot of its buzz — could it possibly fall of this list? And how about So You Think You Can Dance, which has grabbed a nomination for the past two years — will cutting down to just once a week hurt its chances of another nod?
A couple of veteran shows are waiting in the wings should Dancing with the Stars, Project Runway or So You Think You Can Dance fall out of contention. American Idol was nominated nine straight years without winning the award, and then wasn’t even nominated last year. After a season that was criticized for poor judge chemistry and falling ratings, chances of it making its way back onto the list are pretty slim. Despite Jeff Probst’s dominance of the Best Reality Show Host category, for some reason Survivor hasn’t been nominated since 2006; despite a couple of strong editions, its chances, too, are pretty low of making a comeback.
And then there’s the underdog — Rupaul’s Drag Race. Beloved by a small but devoted audience, who include some influential critics, could this dark horse make it’s way into the big leagues?
Here’s what I think the final list will look like:
The Amazing Race
Dancing with the Stars
So You Think You Can Dance
Rupaul’s Drag Race
Agree? Disagree? Let me know!
