I’ve spent the last several weeks Predicting the Emmy Award Nominations and have made it through all of the performance awards in the series categories; now it’s time to turn my attention to the biggies. Today I’ll be looking at the contenders for Best Drama Series.
All six of last year’s nominees in this category are eligible to be nominated again this year, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see a carbon copy of last year’s list announced on July 18. Despite some backlash to the end of the season, returning champ Homeland is a shoo-in for another nomination, as is four-time winner Mad Men. I don’t personally watch Game of Thrones, but from what I’ve heard this past season was quite strong, so I expect it, too, will be granted a nod.
With the final eight episodes set to start airing next month, there’s only two more chances to honor Breaking Bad, and though Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul have both won multiple Emmy Awards for their performances on the show, the series itself has never taken home the top prize. Could this be the year it wins Best Drama Series? One thing’s for sure — it will at least get a nomination.
I’ve predicted an almost complete shut-out for Downton Abbey in the performance categories (Maggie Smith being the lone exception), but I think the show may still have some legs in this category. Boardwalk Empire, though, may be vulnerable — despite two straight nominations, I think it’s on the shakiest ground of last year’s six contenders. Though it likely won’t face much competition from former nominees True Blood, The Good Wife and Dexter, the real question is how much power newbies like The Americans, Bates Motel, House of Cards and Rectify have. Rectify likely doesn’t have the audience, Bates Motel probably has a better chance for Vera Farmiga and Freddie Highmore than for Best Series, and House of Cards‘ best bets are Kevin Spacey and Corey Stoll, but The Americans could just sneak in and grab Boardwalk Empire‘s spot.
We’ll see soon!
Here’s what I think the final list will look like:
Game of Thrones
