It’s time for another round of Predicting the Emmy Nominations — this time, I’ll be looking at Lead Actress in a Comedy Series!
With six different actresses taking home the prize in the last six years, this has been one of the most unpredictable Emmy categories in recent memory. (In fact, the last actress to win two awards is Julia Louis-Dreyfuss, and she won them for two different shows!) Last year, due to a tie in the voting, this category featured the most nominees of any performance category — seven. All seven actresses are eligible to be nominated again this year, but, barring another unlikely tie, at least one will likely be left on the sideline. So who is most likely to make the cut?
Returning champ Julia Louis-Dreyfuss is a shoo-in to repeat for her performance on Veep, and Parks and Recreation‘s Amy Poehler, who many thought would take home the award last year, will also definitely return to the line-up. Ditto former winner Tina Fey, who is sure to get recognized for 30 Rock‘s final season. Mike and Molly‘s Melissa McCarthy was a surprise winner two years ago — will the surprise this year be that she doesn’t get nominated?
Lena Dunham took home the Golden Globe Award for her performance on Girls; will she repeat that success at the Emmys? How about New Girl‘s Zooey Deschanel, who was nominated for her show’s debut season last year — will she make the list again, or will The Mindy Project‘s Mindy Kaling take her spot? While the brilliant Martha Plimpton snuck onto the list a couple of years ago for Raising Hope, with competition this fierce it’s unlikely that she’ll make it back in the running.
Like McCarthy, Nurse Jackie‘s Edie Falco, the 2010 winner, could be vulnerable this year — will she lose her spot to Enlightened‘s Laura Dern? Definitely possible. Patricia Heaton, a two-time winner for Everybody Loves Raymond, has never been nominated for her work on The Middle — is this her year? Seems unlikely. And though I’d love to see Awkward‘s Ashley Rickards get recognized, that seems like a total long-shot.
Here’s what I think the final list will look like:
Laura Dern, Enlightened
Zooey Deschanel, New Girl
Lena Dunham, Girls
Tina Fey, 30 Rock
Julia Louis-Dreyfuss, Veep
Amy Poehler, Parks and Recreation
Agree? Disagree? Let me know!
