This should help relieve some of the (faux) bitterness she displayed on the Tony Awards — Smash star Megan Hilty has landed a series regular gig on Sean Hayes’ new NBC television show Sean Saves the World!
According to tvline.com, Hilty will be playing Liz, the best friend and co-worker of Hayes’ character — the role played in the pilot by Lindsay Sloane. (View the trailer for the show, which features Sloane, here.) This is a double edged sword for fans of Hilty (like me), who were sort of hoping she might find her way back to Broadway. After all, she was brilliant in the Dolly Parton role in the musical 9 to 5 and proved herself an undeniable musical theater star in her many numbers on Smash. Still, it’s hard to begrudge someone as talented as she is — the pressure is on the sitcom to ensure it makes the best of her! (It bodes well that Tony Award-winning comic genius Linda Lavin is also in the cast, playing Hayes’ mother.) Sean Saves the World will air on Thursday nights this fall at 9PM.
What do you think? Are you happy for Hilty’s next move, or would you rather see her back on the Great White Way? And what do you think of the rumor that she’ll be playing one of the wicked stepsisters in the film version of Into the Woods? (See my fantasy casting ideas for the remaining roles in that movie here.)
Here’s a reminder of Hilty’s brilliant number on the Tony’s with Neil Patrick Harris, Laura Benanti and Andrew Rannels.
